Deviation Actions
Through photography and all traditional art media and styles, of all skill levels, member artists display art seen in a way most humans never naturally will - without color!
We accept anyone who requests to be in the group. Member requests are moderated solely so we can make sure everyone sees these rules. Failure to follow the submission rules will result in declined submissions, and no one likes to have a submission declined.
Submission Criteria
Submissions are moderated, so there may be delays of a day or two from time to time.
MUST be art in black, white and grayscale. No coloured, partially coloured, tinted, or sepia submissions will be accepted. The only exception is for colored watermarks or signatures.
Must be a finished work. WIPs will not be accepted to the gallery.
Can be an old or new work, of any quality or skill level. And of any type!
The group is currently accepting only one submission per week per member, so choose your best work. You can always add thumbnails of related works to the comments part of any deviation, thereby helping to increase exposure to your other work.
MUST be your own work. Only members can submit!
Submissions must be to the appropriate folder of our gallery! Choose wisely!
Tutorials must pertain to black and white art in some way, and can be in any medium.
Traditional artists, please keep in mind we are not looking at your original artwork. We are looking at a digital copy, and it is that digital copy which we will be checking against our criteria. The most common reason for declining artwork is unintentional color tinting on images of traditional artwork, especially graphite drawings.
How to Make Sure Your Work is Without Color
If your intention is to post black and white art, this is something you should be doing anyway. It doesn't require any special skills or software or equipment.
If you are creating your art digitally, just make sure it's in grayscale, not RGB, and you'll be all good.
If you are scanning your work, make sure your scanner software is set to "grayscale". You probably won't want to use the "black and white" setting, as this is usually too harsh and will make the work look pixellated. "Grayscale" will make sure it doesn't have color, and you'll retain your shading and soft edges.
If you are photographing your work, chances are you are using a digital camera. The menu setup will vary from camera to camera, but somewhere in the menus you should have the option of setting your camera to black and white mode (usually sepia too). Set to black and white before taking your picture and you're guaranteed of a color-free image.
If your art makes it to digital form and still retains a tint of color all is not lost. Every computer sold today comes with free photo-editing software of some sort. Within that free software, you should have a way to convert the image to black and white, or to "desaturate" it. If you are using purchased software, you should have a way to convert to black and white, AND an option to "desaturate". Either will work.
How To Submit
Once you are a member, there are three places where you should be able to add deviations to the group. On the group's main page, there is a header bar with different activity options (should be visible unless you have deliberately hidden it), where you should see the option of adding a deviation or submitting a blog entry.
The second location is on the group's main gallery page, where you should see a button near the top right that says "+ Submit to this Gallery".
The third location is on the deviation itself. To the right of the comments you should see a section titled "Found in these Groups", with a button for submitting to a group. That will bring up a pop-up window, where you type in the group's name. Once you have submitted via that tool, the group's name will always be visible for you to choose from without typing.
Be careful! Take a good look at the pop-up window that lets you submit to our group. In the right upper corner there should be a dropdown with the Gallery Folders Choose the appropriate folder, according to your deviation.

Commissions? PLEASE READ
Hello~
I thought about offering Commissions for a while now.
A few weeks ago some idiots stole my phone and I don't have any money to buy a new one.
So, if I would do so, would anyone be interested?
I would do portraits like these ->

Apologies and other things!
Hi everyone,
Apologies
Firstly, please accept my apologies for the lack of activity and expired submissions this past month. My work has taken over my life at the moment with a new course to create, revamp 6 others and additional one off sessions needing to be created at short notice. Thankfully I'm now at that stage where it is just amendments that need to be done, and my one off sessions now have advance dates so that I can plan my preparation time.
One of the great things we've started at work is a two year skills and social 'huddle' once a week. Entirely driven by the needs and interests of the group of learners, we will be providing wo
Happy New Year (and Instagram)
Hey everyone,
I just wanted to wish all members a very Happy New Year! I hope that 2015 sees you and those close to you blessed with good health, good fortune and general good times for everyone!!! :D
In addition to running two groups here on dA, my time is increasingly being taken up with work. What started as a part time job is soon to have extra hours, extra courses to teach - and extra paperwork to go with it! :(
Its not too bad though because one of my new courses involves teaching the basics of acrylic painting to adults - which I'm both nervous and excited about.
In the past, I've always waited until a piece is finished before post
Expired Submissions
Hey everyone,
I want to apologise for some submissions expiring before I could approve them.
When I logged on last weekend, the submissions seemed to be randomly placed in the wrong folder. After some time I realised that it wasn't you guys putting them in the wrong folder - it was a technical problem somewhere along the line.
As I hadn't had a chance to log on until today, approx 30 submissions had expired.
If this affected you, please resubmit them. There were some really great pieces amongst them and I'd love to get them included in the gallery!
Again, sorry if it affected you.
